8TH GRADE TEAM - 36 vs. AMITY - 18 (from Sun. 10/4)
In Game 6, the 8th Grade Team from Guilford played host to the undefeated boys from Amity on a pleasant night for football.
Pleasant turned painful at first as Guilford spotted Amity a 12 - 0 lead due to some Special Teams miscues in the 1st Quarter. However, these young men from Guilford showed poise and heart by not hitting the panic button and slowly started to grind it out - starting from their own 3 yard line and taking it all the way down the field for a TD. Then on Defense, they stuffed Amity and gave the ball back to their Offense for another shot to cut the lead. It was a complete Team effort but the Defensive and Offensive line play of Guilford ruled the day. Defensive lineman standouts included the the big man - Hunter Martins and his brothers Freddy Trotta, Robert Nero, Derick Batick, Tristan Parks.
The Offensive Line, led by Dane Lawrence, Aaron Cowee, Jon Paecht, Ford Linell, and Dave Laurie, opened up running lanes all night.
David Knapp played whatever and wherever asked, running and blocking with KC Horton to allow success by Andrew Meoli . After an Amity TD on a broken play to start the 2nd half, Guilford ground out two more TD’s with key runs by Eric Zergiebel, coupled with tough Defense, to put the game away for good at 36 - 18. It was a good win against a talented opponent.
Time to thank the volunteer Assistant Coaches Kenny Horton, Dave Laurie, Fred Trotta and our key helpers John Knapp and Lee Altieri as well as our MVP Team Mom Maribeth Lawrence for all they do to help prepare our guys each week.
Guilford goes back on the road to meet Madison next Sunday.

8TH GRADE TEAM - 32 vs. BRANFORD - 13 (from Wed. 9/30)
G8 returned home September 30th for an odd Wednesday night game to take on neighboring Branford. Special Teams paved the way to victory leading to two early touchdowns: the first coming on a recovery of the opening kickoff by Andrew Meoli and subsequent Touchdown; the second from a blocked punt caused by the defensive line of Hunter Martins, John Paecht and Freddy Trotta with a recovery for a touchdown by David Knapp. Branford played tough Defense all night making Guilford earn every yard gained. The Guilford Defense matched the challenge – covering the complex Branford passing attack well – especially the secondary of Joey Palmieri, KC Horton, Ryan Hart and Joey Nault with a pair of interceptions. Both teams traded touchdowns in the second half leaving a final score of Guilford 32, Branford 13.
The guys from Guilford were inspired to score a final touchdown and give the Game Ball to a fallen brother – Donald Grigley – who is recuperating from an injury. Get well soon Donald!
Guilford now looks ahead to an undefeated Amity Team on short rest as we enter the October schedule on Sunday 10/4.

7TH GRADE TEAM - 0 at BRANFORD - 20
Frankie is home tonight. He did dislocate his hip.................nasty. I saw him at the hospital and he was a trooper, lots of pain, but took it like a Team 7 GYF player. Tony and Frankie, I'm proud of your guts with those injuries. It looks like Ricky Bobby is recovering also. If we had him and Driver, I think we could have pulled one off.
Great Job at Saturday nights game! It was really a lot closer than the score. You guys really did give it all you had this time. Everyone gave something last night.
Captain Johnny Rocket played great at outside LB, and got us a huge fumble recovery. Captain Pez Stokes played with a ton of energy, the best he has done all year at safety, and Captain Guido Shan was all over the place on "D" and "O" line for us!
Charlie Molloy was flawless at center, as well as a force at inside LB. Otis Ek was his usual dominant self, drawing the attention of opposing coaches...................as well as officials. Crayola filled in well at LB for us, and special teams, even playing through an injury. Bug played his best EVER, stopping a few of the Hornets. Thing kept it up by never letting his man beat him, and Sam Sham ran around the field like I've never seen him do! Stone Cold was his usual dependable self, but I'm worried................he smiled last night! Wolverine filled in very well at corner, breaking up a pass play and almost coming away with an INT. Hacksaw and the Intimidator did very well against great Branford down field blocking. Ca lander Boy Ross did well at a new position for him, real well. Per was like a diesel on "D".................sorry bad choice of words Per! The Fish NEVER stopped, he swam up-stream all night, and GNash spent his time at corner, denying all receivers. Monty Python Crumpet started out like a wall of fire and never even slowed down to get extra jam! Spud earned his 'taters with another BIG third down catch, he looks like Dave Casper out there..............runs like him too! And last, but certainly not least, Hollywood Tony-O, in his first game after injury was remarkable. Great "D", and great running boy!
That should be everyone, you boys really kept it together and kept playing with all the injuries/absences and illnesses, great job boys!

6TH GRADE TEAM - 8 vs. CLINTON - 36
Guilford played a hard hitting game against Clinton on Sunday after a soggy win last week.
To start off Guilford played tough defense in the first half allowing only 3 big plays by Clinton. With Clinton leading by 22 points in the first half they took a time out with 3 seconds left in the half to try another score. The Mean Green shut them down. To start the 2nd half, Guilford came out ready to hit, & hit they did. Notable impact plays were made by Nick "Boulder" Moscato on a 12 yard run, Nick "White Pants" Mascola stunned a much larger Clinton lineman with an audible block, & Cody "the Flash" Cox made numerous tackles during the 2nd half. Nick "Sunshine" Poretta scored Guilford's touchdown with Ben Fazzina providing the 2 point conversion. With time running out in the 4th quarter, Guilford drove the ball 80 yards with some great plays by Korey "Mac" Carregal, Nate Tepley, & Jack Jankura. Guilford needed one last play to score again, but time was not on their side. Final score 36-8.
