Week 1 Report
8TH GRADE TEAM - 36  at  NORTH BRANFORD - 14
Guilford G8 took it to “The Pit” in North Branford on Sunday with their undefeated record on the line against an always tough No. Branford program. Guilford got a little banged up and muddy but came away with an impressive win. It is a supercharged, intense football environment to play in with the opposing fans creating an exciting challenge right in the grille of the visiting Team – us in this case.

With the Offensive Line opening holes that our Team Mom could score through (we have a pretty talented Team Mom MB), G8 scored on our 1st Offensive Play. It is hard not to mention them so here goes: Dane Lawrence, Freddy Trotta, Jon Paecht, Ford Linell, Hunter Martins and Dave Laurie were the stars of the game this day. The guys scoring the touchdowns were Andrew Meoli , Joey Nault, Ryan Hart (on a beautiful long touchdown catch) and KC Horton. The Defense was tough all day, giving up just six points (other NB TD scored on kickoff return) – led by Ford Linell, David Knapp and Eric Zergiebel. It was a bruising battle overall and provided some coaching moments: don’t panic at adversity and don’t let others control your destiny – as Guilford looks ahead to a Branford team that passes the ball well and will stretch our Defense.

These are young men who have played football together for years and now that past coaching and familiarity are paying dividends – with thanks going out to their former Coaches and teammates who have helped build their fundamentals.

7TH GRADE TEAM - 6  at  EAST HAVEN - 26
The GYF 7th grade team went to East Haven and got stung early by the Yellow Jackets with the final score being 26-6. Guilford had to play without the help of "Driver" Eldridge, Game Captain, who had a rough night at the hospital. Although he was unable to play, he still came to lead and cheer his team, however we sorely missed his line play.

The team also lost Tony-O- Pensa after an incredible 4th and 6 yard...........First Down! He was tackled hard reaching for the marker and crashed into it injuring his side. He went to the hospital, but he is OK and ready to go again. His play was outstanding.

After the East Haven team took a knee out of respect for us, we fired up the offense to score one for Tony. The line held and Shawn Ross threw a perfect ball to Intimidator Lundberg in full stride, from their 4 yard line. He ended up getting caught on our 6 with 7 seconds left. After a time out, Jake tried to push it in but he was stopped. A quick thinking Rammer Ranfone called a timeout before Jake hit the ground and we had one second left, down 26-0. Rammer told us he wouldn't be stopped and we called a screen pass, executed perfectly by the line and Shawn Ross. Rammer caught it, broke a few arm tackles and somehow got into the end zone with no time left. WOW!

To see these boys do that for their teammate was remarkable. They would not be shut out, they would not be stopped. They said they would score for their injured brother.........and they did.

6TH GRADE TEAM - 6  at  MADISON - 28

5TH GRADE TEAM - 25  vs.  CHESHIRE B - 12
The Guilford boys scored a convincing win against a solid Cheshire team showcasing their wide array of offensive weapons. Five different "junior" Indians got in the end zone. "Big" Ben Currier started the scoring fest with a kick off return for a touchdown. Remy "Wolverine" Lepeak added the extra point on a nifty little run getting a key block from Steve Napoli. Jake Moscarelli added another touchdown in the first half for a halftime score of 13-6. In the second half, Chucky Karol and Zach "Z Man" Conover both got career firsts on a touchdown pass that Karol took into the end zone. "Z Man" capped the scoring with a short run late in the game.

The defense got a stand out effort from James "Crazy Legs" Bright - he recorded both an interception and a fumble recovery. Wills Smith also had an impressive day at the defensive tackle position. The block of the day came from Evan Hilgert - 30 yards downfield he delivered an impressive crushing blow to spring Moscarelli for his TD. The boys go back on the road next week with a game at Branford.
