Guilford G8 traveled to Old Saybrook for their first away game and came home with a nice win in which everyone got a lot of playing time and all players had a chance to contribute to the victory. Displaying their variety of Offensive threats, touchdowns were scored by Eric Zergiebel, David Knapp and KC Horton. The Offensive Line of Robert Nero, Fred Trotta, Jon Paecht, Dane Lawrence, Ford Linell, Hunter Martins and Dave Laurie made it all possible with great blocking. The Defense was solid with line play by Derek Batick, Donald Grigley, Tristan Park and Aaron Cowee, Steve Lavoie was all over the field and Joe Palmieri made solid tackles at cornerback. On a Guilford kick-off Joey Nault made a fumble-causing tackle that resulted in a safety for the Green team. Other big plays included Ryan Hart throwing a long pass to set-up a touchdown and KC Horton intercepting a pass to stop an Old Saybrook threat.
Guilford G8 continues on the road next week against North Branford in what promises to be a Battle .
7TH GRADE TEAM - 8 vs. OLD SAYBROOK - 15
The 7th grade boys attempted to "Take care of Business" on Sunday, but fell short to Old Saybrook/Westbrook 15-8.
Led by captain's Fish Goyette, Ricky-Bobby Heller and Spud Iassogna the boys dominated time of possession with long drives throughout the game. Unfortunately, turnovers cost them by ending several long drives without scores.
A spectacular catch by Heller, thrown by Jake Lundberg, electrified the team, as well as several big plays by Hollywood Pensa, Intimidator Lundberg and Rammer Ranfone.
The defense was awesome, considering the time spent on the field. Ek Eckmann, Malloy and Spud plugged up the middle time and time again, while Hacksaw and Intimidator shut down the outside lanes. Hollywood and Pez Stokes made sure nobody got far.
Shawn Ross kicked our first extra point!
All in all it was a very good game between two evenly matched teams. Next up is East Haven, at East Haven, Sunday at 3:00p.m.
6TH GRADE TEAM - 6 vs. NORTH BRANFORD - 22
5TH GRADE TEAM - 7 at NORTH BRANFORD - 12
In a very evenly matched game the Guilford boys came out on the opening drive and took the ball down inside North Branford's 10 yard line - using the whole first quarter to do so. The running of "Big" Ben Currier, Jake Moscarelli and QB "Z Man" Zach Conover had the defense on its toes. A nice pitch and catch between Conover and "Crazy Legs" Bright and a reverse by Shane Molloy had the Guilford team on the doorstep. After a couple of miscues the N Branford team took over on downs. Down 6-0 at the half, Guilford continually drove deep into N Branford territory but were unable to convert for the important TD. When NB scored with 50 seconds to go to make the score 12-0 the game was seemingly out of reach. On the ensuing kickoff, Currier took the ball the distance on a reverse and the game was back on. After Moscarelli added the extra point, Currier recovered an onside kick. The Guilford offense attempted a few desperation plays only to come up just short. However, the Guilford boys showed unbelievable heart and staying power and nearly pulled off a last minute win. Next week they come back home to take back their home field advantage against Cheshire.
