On a beautiful night for football, G8 played under the lights before a big crowd against the team from Milford. It was a game where all players contributed to the victory - playing well on Defense and hitting on all cylinders on Offense. Standouts included Donald Grigsley, Carson Sperry, Dane Lawrence and Derek Batick, who played both ways on O & D, KC Horton who scored 2 touchdowns including one where he started a full second after his team while he was busy with his mouthguard (it now becomes our new trick play), and Robert Nero - who intercepted a pass and had the character to purposely run out of bounds to keep his Coaches from major trouble.
We have a hard-working team that plays well together - a joy to coach overall. Starters were happy to give way to guys pushing them as back-ups - making everyone better in the process. This was a night when Guilford could do no wrong - and the stars were aligned: Dave Laurie caught a pass, Joey Palmieri broke a short pass for 10 minutes, it seemed; Steve Lavoie took command of the Offense and Robert Nero was on his way to taking it to the house with that pass interception - looked back to his sideline - and stepped out of bounds to prevent further scoring on an opponent that was having an off night. This is one of the reasons volunteer coaches Coach - as we had asked our Team to not add to the scoring. The team now has off over the Labor Day weekend before taking it on the road against Old Saybrook/Westbrook in Game 3. Going Green...

The "road warrior" Guilford boys got their first win of the season with an
inspired effort at Old Saybrook. After receiving the opening kickoff the
boys drove down the field behind the running of Jake Moscarelli and "Big"
Ben Currier. The offensive line of Wills Smith, Evan Hilgert, Chucky Karol,
AJ Moscato and Anthony Avallone opened big holes as they would do all day.
The drive was capped off with a Shane Molloy reverse for a TD. After
Moscarelli recorded the extra point, the boys were quickly at it again when
Wills recovered an onside kick. After a long run by QB Zach Conover, this
time Jake finished the drive and the extra point. Old Saybrook got a TD on
the last play of the half to close to 14-6.
In the second half the Guilford boys came out ready to put the game away.
On a critical 4th down "Big Ben" (in keeping with his nickname) completed a
pass to Shane Molloy that quickly turned into a breakaway for a touchdown.
It was "Big Ben's" first career TD pass. "Crazy Legs" Bright added the
extra point. After the defense shutdown the Old Saybrook offense, the
offense quickly broke off a big run by Moscarelli to put this one out of
reach. "Z-Man" Zach Conover took in the extra point and the boys had a 28-6
lead. Moscarelli added a third TD late and the defense did their job to
secure the final score. Great defensive effort from Remy Lepeak at the
defensive end contained any ideas Old Saybrook had of coming back. He had a
lot of added help from a quartet of defensive tackles Billy Gorman, Daniel
Andrien, John Portacarrero and Josh Lindgren. Next week the boys are on the
road again in North Branford.
